The traditional lands of the Peramangk people are an area steeped in history, with Jupiter goldfields, Mount Torrens historic town, Sir Hans Heyson’s former residence the Cedars, the German settlement of Hahndorf, and myriad other historic gems, all nestled amongst the picturesque environs of the Adelaide Hills. This is a truly magical place to visit, just a short drive from our perch here on Mount Lofty, with a range of sights and offerings for all the senses.
It was 1978 that Brian Croser selected the Piccadilly Valley, realising its perfect potential for a vineyard owing to its spectacular terroir of clay loam with a calc-silicate base. This makes an excellent basis for growing Chardonnay for the singular Petaluma Chardonnay, as well as Pinot Noir for their Croser sparkling wine. This iconic living viticultural treasure of a heritage vineyard was first planted in 1979, and owing to its cool climate and favourable conditions is one of the most well-regarded Chardonnay vineyards in Australia. The area is a homoclime of Dijon in the Burgundy region of France.
For the purists out there, the vinification process here is highly traditional; fruit is harvested by hand, and then whole-bunch pressed to French Oak, approximately 30% new barrels. In terms of fermentation, some undergoes malolactic fermentation, which is followed by nine months in the barrel before the bottling process.
Chardonnay lovers will revel in this gorgeous drop. The Petaluma is a joy to encounter, and is a pastiche to the classic Australian, full bodied Chardonnays. Exhibiting the rich, buttery notes characteristic of well wooded, oak barrel-matured Chardonnays, the complexity of flavours in the Petaluma meld together in a beautifully smooth symphony.
Lauded as one of the best sparkling wines in Australia, the Croser Pinot Noir Chardonnay sparkling wine is said to be reminiscent of wines from the Champagne region itself, with a classic vibe. Complex and nuanced, this sparkling has elegant notes of cashew, citrus and honey. On the palate one will experience hints of wild strawberry next to buttery nectarine, with a yeasty finish.
You can visit the cellar door for tastings of the full wine range, including the Croser sparkling and Petaluma Chardonnay, all whilst overlooking the beautiful and picturesque vineyard when visiting Hardy’s Verandah Restaurant.
